The Redesign Lab is a place in our studio that serves as a space to drive collaboration between Seattle area upcyclers for product innovation. As its name suggests, it acts as a laboratory for local artisans who we collaborate with to explore the possibilities of how we can transform the textiles that we’ve diverted and help each others’ businesses grow. The lab is complete with a PFAFF industrial serger, industrial sewing machines, a felting machine, a Cricut Maker, and other equipment and tools to support creativity.
Not to mention the different kinds of textiles that they are able to experiment with as well as vintage sewing notions that we’ve acquired.
These collaborations at the Redesign Lab have resulted in the development of original patterns for bucket hats, wine bags, pillows, and handbags. We are a go-to resource for textile showrooms, textile reps, and other design industry businesses which can have their discontinued fabric samples made into custom products locally sewn in Seattle.

In spring of 2024 Redesign Collective and Abdul-Malik Ford collaborated to design RC’s first bucket hat pattern.
Artisan: Abdul-Malik Ford
Brand: ThreadGoldz
Malik is the king of bucket hats and his wearable art brand ThreadGoldz creates the most intricate and expressive wearable art you will find in Seattle.
Question: Could Malik create a bucket hat out using 18inx18in fabric samples?
Trial 1: The 18in square could accommodate the pattern pieces but required patching scraps which resulted in a lot of seams and extra work. Conclusion: Try 27in square samples.
Trial 2: Malik designed a bucket hat pattern especially for Redesign Collective and tried variations for the lining. White cotton, denim, and reversible prototypes were created for customers to choose from.
Conclusion: We can create custom bucket hats from any 27inx27in samples!
